The alternative to proper working brakes is almost certainly a situation where you will not be able to stop, and one that most likely involves serious injury or even death. When one pays attention to the behaviors of their car, often you resolve brake issue before the become costly to your pocket and more imperatively to your person.

See if you can hear any sounds of grinding coming from the front corner of your car while you apply your brakes. Always try to exam if you get a rough feeling coming from your brake pedal when you go to stop, these are likely positive signs that you need to at least replace your brake pads. Fixing this issue as soon as it arises is imperative, delaying will only lead to the need to fix additional problems in the long run, such as loss of pressure fluid in your brake lines themselves or a broken brake rotor which can really compromise the safety of you and those riding in your car.

If you do hear a grinding noise or feel resistance when applying the brakes, you will likely need a pad replacement. If you are mechanically inclined you could likely do basic repairs yourself. You would want to go to your local auto parts store and ask for information on brake pads and the correct ways to effectively change them out.  Simple brake pads should put you no more than $20 a wheel. Please note you always want to purchase brake pads in pairs, as you want even wear on the pads. If you find ware on one wheel always replace both pads.

If you find you waited to long to replace your pads, of if you find you have quickly worn through several pairs of pads, it may be time to take a look at replacing you brake rotors as well. Replacing your rotor can cost on average between $35 to $65 a wheel. Again if you have the proper mechanical inclination this can be done personally as well. You will find however that this requires a bit more skill than simply replacing your pads. If you find your rotors have not been properly rotated or replaces in a while, there is a good chance they might be fused to the internal working of the wheel itself. At this point you will need to receive brake services from an auto repair services shop.

If you feel more comfortable bringing your vehicle to an auto repair shop, or you find you just need to, please be aware or expect to pay anywhere from one hundred and fifty dollars to around a thousand dollars for a brake job. The severity of the job of course will depend on the condition of your brakes and their internal parts such as your brake pads, lines and rotors. Of course the labor from the repair shop technicians will come into play as well.

Working brakes are one of the most important factors in vehicle safety today. If you do not feel that you are skilled enough to do the work on your own, there is no one better than your local auto service repair shop. In the long run saving a little money and time is simply not worth risking your life and the lives of those in your vehicle and on the road around you.
